A Hyundai struck a tree on Southeast 23rd Place in Cape Coral early Saturday, October 17, 2026. Police said the driver and a female passenger left the car and fled the scene. Homeowner Kenneth Joseph said he discovered the crash outside his home around 1 a.m. He said the vehicle narrowly missed parked cars. Joseph had not heard the collision and learned about it when police rang his doorbell and asked whether he had a video camera. He told officers he did not have one. Police identified the driver as Johnseph Aguilar. Neighbors told Cape Coral police that Aguilar ran from the crash and tried to hide. Officers said they later found him inside a plastic storage closet in the backyard of a home on Southeast Fourth Street. Joseph took photographs of the crash scene after officers told him the Hyundai's occupants had fled. He said he was relieved the damage was not worse and that debris would be collected with his regular trash pickup. Aguilar faces charges of hit-and-run, trespassing and resisting an officer, according to police.
