Central Police issued a warning about a dangerous social media challenge that they say led to a major crash on Central Thruway. The incident occurred on October 28, 2024, when a 17-year-old driver lost control of his northbound vehicle while allegedly participating in a drift challenge promoted on platforms like TikTok and YouTube. Witnesses described seeing the car weave in and out of traffic and perform "brake checks" before veering off the road as it approached the Frenchtown Road intersection.
According to police, the northbound vehicle crossed the median, collided with a southbound vehicle, and eventually came to rest on the west side of the roadway. Moments later, the northbound vehicle caught fire. Fortunately, police reported that no serious injuries were sustained in the crash. Assistant Chief Cliff Ivey emphasized the real-world consequences that can arise from engaging in such reckless behavior, stating that "even though you see them in cyberspace, you don’t respawn in real life, and your car doesn’t automatically repair."
In response to the accident, officials are urging parents to educate their driving-age children about the risks associated with participating in these social media challenges. They highlighted the importance of understanding that drifting—defined as intentionally oversteering to cause a loss of traction—comes with significant dangers not just to the driver but to everyone on the road. The crash prompted a partial closure of Central Thruway as authorities cleared the scene and conducted their investigation.
