Authorities said a bicyclist died after being struck by a vehicle Thursday morning in the eastbound protected bicycle lane on the 17th Street Causeway bridge in Fort Lauderdale.
The crash was reported at about 6:40 a.m. on June 25, 2026. Local reports indicate the vehicle left the scene after the collision. Investigators later announced an arrest in the case, and a 22-year-old woman was charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death. Authorities also said an additional evidence-tampering charge was filed.
The bicyclist was identified as 68-year-old Shelley Lewis of Fort Lauderdale. Emergency responders took Lewis to a nearby hospital after the crash, but she later died from her injuries.
Police have said the collision happened inside the bicycle-only lane on the bridge. Why the vehicle was in that protected lane has not been publicly explained, and investigators had not released surveillance video as of the latest reports. Officials also had not publicly detailed how the suspect vehicle was located.
Because this was a fatal hit-and-run investigation, additional records may become important for family members and others affected, including the traffic crash report, court records, witness information, and any available surveillance evidence. While the investigation continues, people dealing with insurance or related questions may also want to speak with a Fort Lauderdale bicycle accident lawyer before making major decisions.
