In a tragic incident earlier this month in Riverdale, New Jersey, a police sergeant from East Hanover was involved in a deadly car accident. Keith M. Gunther, 42, of Wanaque, was charged after driving the wrong way and allegedly causing a crash on Route 23. The crash, which occurred close to 11 p.m. on October 15, happened when Gunther, reportedly under the influence, drove his Ford F-150 south in the northbound lanes, colliding head-on with a Toyota Camry.
The passenger in the Camry, 55-year-old Hamid Shabuddin from Paterson, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Camry was injured and taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center but thankfully did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Gunther faces serious charges, including second-degree vehicular homicide, third-degree assault by auto, and driving while intoxicated. He has since been released under a series of pretrial conditions, which include surrendering his driver’s license and passport.
Officials have shared that Gunther showed signs of being intoxicated at the crash site. An important upcoming date is set for December 9, when Gunther is expected in court for a pre-indictment conference.
