Authorities said a three-vehicle crash on County Road 42 in Marion County left one person dead and sent another to a hospital Wednesday afternoon. The collision happened east of Southeast 105th Avenue, where troopers responded shortly before 2 p.m.
Investigators said a westbound sedan crossed the centerline and collided head-on with an eastbound pickup truck. After that impact, debris from the crash was scattered into the roadway and was struck by a second westbound sedan that was traveling behind the first car.
The 30-year-old driver of the sedan that crossed the centerline, identified only as a man from Leesburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities also said a 27-year-old woman from that same sedan was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. Another passenger left the scene after the crash, and no further details about that person were immediately available.
The pickup was being driven by a 32-year-old man from Summerfield, and a 4-year-old boy riding in that vehicle had minor injuries, according to authorities. The second sedan had five occupants, including two children, and no injuries were reported in that vehicle.
County Road 42 was closed for about three hours while troopers investigated and cleared the scene. Officials have not released the name of the person who died, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation.
