Authorities said a three-vehicle crash on County Road 42 in Marion County left one man dead and sent another person to a hospital Wednesday afternoon.
The collision happened shortly before 2 p.m. on County Road 42 east of Southeast 105th Avenue. Investigators said a westbound sedan crossed the centerline and struck an eastbound pickup truck head-on. After that impact, debris from the crash was scattered into the roadway and was hit by a second westbound sedan traveling behind the first car.
A 30-year-old man from Leesburg, who was driving the sedan that crossed the centerline, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to authorities. A 27-year-old woman riding in that vehicle was taken to a hospital for treatment. The sedan also reportedly had another male passenger who left the scene after the crash.
The pickup was driven by a 32-year-old Summerfield man and also carried a 4-year-old boy. Reports indicated the child suffered minor injuries. No injuries were reported among the five occupants of the third vehicle, which included two children.
County Road 42 was closed for about three hours while troopers investigated the wreck and cleared the scene. Officials have not released the name of the man who died, and the cause of the crash remained under investigation as of the latest reports.
