Authorities said two Kissimmee residents were killed Tuesday afternoon in a single-vehicle rollover crash on the southbound Florida Turnpike near mile marker 240 in the St. Cloud area of Osceola County.
The crash was reported at about 1:10 p.m. in the southbound lanes. Investigators said a 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser was traveling south when it left the roadway for reasons that had not been publicly explained, struck the inside concrete barrier, then crossed back across the highway, overturned, and hit the barrier on the opposite side.
Officials said the driver, a 56-year-old man, was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A 65-year-old woman riding in the SUV died at the scene. Their names had not been released in the information available as of this article's publication.
The wreck also caused a lengthy traffic disruption on the Turnpike. Southbound lanes near mile marker 240 were shut down for several hours in the Saint Cloud area before reopening around 6 p.m., according to authorities.
At this stage, the circumstances that caused the vehicle to leave the roadway remain under investigation. No other vehicles were reported as involved in the crash.
