One person is dead and four others suffered severe injuries following a crash along Interstate 75 in Marion County on Tuesday afternoon. According to reports from the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded at approximately 3:20 p.m. near mile marker 358. The involved vehicles were a Honda Odyssey minivan and an Amazon semitractor-trailer.
The initial investigation indicates that the minivan, driven by a 40-year-old man from Immokalee, unexpectedly veered off the roadway and into the grassy median. Authorities reported that the driver appeared to have overcorrected, causing the minivan to cross all lanes and enter the merge lane from State Road 326. Tragically, this maneuver resulted in a collision with the semi-truck that was unable to avoid impact. The minivan ended up veering off the road down a grassy embankment, where it came to a stop.
Among the passengers in the minivan, a man was pronounced dead at the scene, while two others and the driver were taken to HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. Two of the hospitalized victims were reported in critical condition, while the remaining passenger suffered serious injuries. The truck driver, a 59-year-old man from Hallandale Beach, sustained only minor injuries.
Authorities have stated that the investigation is ongoing as they work to gather further details about the movements of both vehicles prior to the accident. The southbound lanes of I-75 were closed for nearly three hours, creating significant traffic congestion as emergency responders worked to manage the scene and transport the injured.
