Authorities are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened Monday morning in Summerfield at the intersection of SE 178th Street and County Road 475.
According to authorities, the collision occurred just before 6 a.m. and involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck. Investigators said a 71-year-old man was driving west on SE 178th Street and had stopped at the intersection with County Road 475. A 62-year-old Ocala man was riding a motorcycle south on County Road 475 at the same time.
Troopers said the pickup then began a wide right turn onto County Road 475 and moved into the motorcycle's path. The motorcycle struck the left front side of the pickup, and the rider was thrown from the bike.
The motorcyclist was taken to a hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The pickup driver was not reported injured.
The intersection remained closed for several hours Monday morning while the crash scene was investigated. Authorities have not announced any additional findings beyond the preliminary account, and the investigation was continuing.
