A fatal plane accident at Miami International Airport left five people dead and five others injured Sunday afternoon in Miami, according to authorities.
Officials said 21 Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767 flying for Amazon Air, overran a runway after landing at about 2 p.m. local time on September 6. The aircraft came to rest after going beyond the airport’s diagonal runway.
Authorities identified the five people who died as Rolando Aleman Leon, 55; Yoel Rodriguez Narajo, 53; Julio C. Pineda, 75; Carlos Acosta Fajardo, 53; and Javierkys Reyes Quevedo, 47. Ten people were reported to have been involved in the crash overall. In addition to the five fatalities, officials said five others were injured. Three of the injured remained hospitalized, including two in critical condition and one in stable condition, while two others were taken to a local hospital.
The pilot and copilot were reported trapped in the cockpit after the crash. Emergency crews responded at the airport, and local officials later confirmed the casualty numbers during a news conference.
A federal investigation is underway. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the runway overrun, and the Federal Aviation Administration also confirmed the crash. Authorities have not released a final determination on what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway.
