One person was killed in a two-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon in Mahanoy Township, according to authorities. Emergency responders were called around 3 p.m. to Morea Road, near Fabcon, to investigate a crash that involved a tractor-trailer and a passenger van. The collision resulted in one driver’s death while the other was transported to a trauma center by helicopter.
State Police reported that the crash occurred when the driver of the passenger van, identified as 65-year-old Thomas Flaherty, drove off the road, striking a traffic sign. He then crossed into oncoming traffic, leading to a collision with the tractor-trailer. Sadly, the coroner pronounced Flaherty dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer sustained head injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
As first responders conducted their investigation, Morea Road remained closed to traffic into the evening. At this time, officials are working to gather additional details about the incident and the drivers involved.
