Authorities are investigating a fatal early morning crash in southwest Miami-Dade that shut down part of US 1 after a Tesla sedan collided with a flatbed commercial truck.
The crash happened at about 2:30 a.m. Thursday in the northbound lanes of South Dixie Highway near Southwest 127th Avenue, according to authorities. Reported details indicate the Tesla struck the rear of the truck while the truck was moving slowly as part of a caravan of work vehicles in the area.
Two women who were inside the Tesla, both described by authorities as being in their late 20s or early 30s, were pronounced dead at the scene. No additional identifying information had been released in the initial reports.
Officials said the truck drivers had recently finished work farther up the road before the collision. A cause had not been announced as of Thursday, and investigators had not publicly explained why the Tesla hit the back of the truck.
The collision also affected traffic in the area. US 1 was closed between Southwest 240th Street and Southwest 232nd Street following the crash while authorities worked at the scene and continued their investigation.
For families trying to understand what comes next, official crash reports, vehicle records, photos, and any insurance correspondence may become important as the investigation develops.
