A 38-year-old Kissimmee man died after a crash involving a Toyota Corolla and a semi-truck at US 17/92 and Sunny Acres Road in Davenport on June 13, according to authorities. The collision was reported at about 2:30 p.m. near the intersection just north of Ernie Caldwell Boulevard.
Investigators said the semi-truck was traveling south on US 17/92 when the oncoming Corolla was seen drifting across the center line more than once. Authorities said the car then moved fully out of the northbound lane and into the path of the truck, leading to a head-on collision at the intersection.
The driver of the Corolla was identified as Joel Nelson, 38, of Kissimmee. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Authorities said both drivers were wearing seat belts. The truck driver tried to brake and avoid the impact, but the crash still caused major front-end damage to both vehicles.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said distracted driving may have been a factor, but the investigation was still ongoing as of the latest reports. No charges or final findings had been announced.
