Frederick Sewell, 69, of Jefferson, was seriously injured when a vehicle struck him during a 5K run/walk event on Double Springs Church Road in Monroe, Georgia, on Saturday, October 24, 2026. He was transported for medical treatment.
Georgia State Patrol troopers responded to the vehicle-pedestrian collision near Cedar Ridge Road at about 8:15 a.m. and began investigating. That was the reported response time, not a confirmed time of impact.
According to the patrol, a 2016 Hyundai Elantra driven by Arlene Hall, 61, of Loganville, was heading east on Double Springs Church Road. Sewell was also moving east in the eastbound lane while participating in the event.
Authorities said participants were spread out along the road, with some running and others walking. A Monroe police officer was following the group but was not within sight of the collision, the patrol said.
Troopers reported finding no signs indicating that the road was closed or that an event was underway. Authorities said Hall unknowingly drove onto the road amid the participants before the front of the Elantra struck Sewell.
The Georgia State Patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team also responded to assist with the investigation. Authorities said impairment was not suspected. Whether charges would be filed had not been determined at the time of the report.
The organizers of the event on Double Springs Church Road were not immediately known. The event was separate from the 5K and 10K races held in downtown Monroe that morning, and runners in those downtown races were not involved in the collision.
After a pedestrian collision in Monroe, Georgia, keeping copies of the crash report, medical records and insurance correspondence can help document the incident. A qualified Georgia attorney can review those records and explain applicable deadlines and insurance questions.
