A pickup struck a hay bale that fell from a towed unit on Highway 136 at Neon Road, about two miles west of Ravenwood in Nodaway County, Missouri. The crash occurred at approximately 7:56 p.m. on October 29, 2026, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Two vehicles were traveling in opposite directions along the highway before the crash. A 49-year-old Ravenwood man was headed east in a 1995 GMC tractor that was towing a unit. A 62-year-old Maryville man was traveling west in a 2015 Chevrolet 1500 pickup.
According to the Highway Patrol, a bale of hay came off the unit behind the GMC and fell into the westbound lane. The Chevrolet hit the bale head-on and then crossed the roadway's center.
After the impact with the hay bale, the pickup left Highway 136 on the south side. It went uphill and collided with a corner post in a fence. The Chevrolet stopped on its wheels, pointing south.
The Highway Patrol said the GMC driver first continued to his destination. He then returned to the crash site in a smaller vehicle and notified 911.
The Highway Patrol classified the pickup driver's injuries as minor. He was taken by private vehicle to Mosaic in Maryville for treatment.
The Chevrolet was reported as totaled, and Shells towed it from the scene. The GMC tractor was not damaged and was driven away from the crash location.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol was the investigating agency for the Thursday evening crash. It received assistance from the Nodaway County Sheriff's Department, Nodaway County Emergency Medical Services, Jackson Fire and the Nodaway County Rescue Squad.
