A Thomas County school bus carrying 37 people struck a recently cut-down tree near Waukeenah Highway and East Pinhook Road in Monticello, Jefferson County, Florida. The crash was reported October 23, 2026. Authorities reported no injuries.
The bus was bringing middle school students home from a field trip when the driver lost control on a curve, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office. The Florida Highway Patrol confirmed the number of people aboard.
In a statement, the patrol said the driver was unfamiliar with the area and did not notice a sharp left bend while interacting with a teacher on the bus. The sheriff’s office said the bus was nearly stopped when it struck the tree.
The Jefferson County School District supplied another bus to move the students from the crash area to a nearby church. They waited there for a replacement bus from Thomas County.
Sheriff Mac McNeil confirmed that the students were inside the church, where they had access to air conditioning, water and Halloween candy while waiting for transportation.
The Florida Highway Patrol was investigating the crash. Authorities said charges were pending, but the supplied information did not identify a specific charge.
