Ryan Martin, 50, of Springfield, South Dakota, was pronounced dead at the scene when his pickup was recovered from the water just south of Standing Bear Bridge on the Missouri River in Nebraska. Details of the single-vehicle truck crash on N-14 were reported October 26, 2026.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 10:54 p.m. on October 18 reporting a vehicle in the water with its driver unable to get out. That time identifies the emergency call, not when the crash occurred.
A responding deputy found a white Ford F-350 submerged in a swamp area southwest of the bridge. The pickup was approximately 200 feet from shore.
Niobrara Fire and Rescue, Nebraska State Patrol, Yankton Search and Rescue, Nebraska Game and Parks, Santee Police Department, Verdigre Fire and Rescue, and Lifenet also responded. The sheriff’s office credited a towing service from Yankton, South Dakota, with helping responders gain access to the vehicle.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation described the incident as a roadway-departure crash on the stretch of N-14 between N-12 and Standing Bear Bridge.
The department said two other crashes had occurred on that highway segment during the preceding nine years. Both were single-vehicle crashes in which a vehicle left the roadway and rolled over. Both occurred during dark evening conditions and resulted in minor injuries. Those circumstances describe the earlier crashes, not findings about the crash involving Martin.
The department said it was not conducting a safety study at the location at the time of the report.
Following a fatal crash on N-14 near Standing Bear Bridge on the Missouri River in Nebraska, families may want to retain crash reports, vehicle recovery records and insurance correspondence. A qualified attorney can review those records and explain questions about insurance coverage and applicable filing deadlines.
