Five people were seriously injured in a head-on crash early Monday on Highway 97 about a half mile south of Howell Road in Escambia County, according to authorities.

The crash happened at about 5 a.m. south of Walnut Hill and involved a Nissan Rogue and a GMC Sierra pickup truck. Troopers said the Nissan was traveling north when it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with the southbound pickup.

Authorities said the Nissan was driven by a 23-year-old man. The pickup was driven by a 37-year-old man and also carried a 31-year-old woman and two girls, ages 3 and 6. All five people involved were reported seriously injured.

According to the available information, the two adult occupants of the pickup and the 3-year-old child were airlifted to Pensacola hospitals as trauma alerts. The Nissan driver and the 6-year-old child were also taken to a hospital for treatment.

The crash shut down Highway 97 south of Walnut Hill for several hours Monday morning as emergency crews responded and investigators worked at the scene.

Head-on crashes on rural highways often lead to extended road closures because of the severity of injuries, vehicle damage, and the need for a detailed investigation. Anyone affected by this crash may want to obtain the official traffic crash report and any follow-up information released by the Florida Highway Patrol.
