An assistant fire chief in Newtown was tragically struck and killed by a driver on October 28, 2024. The victim, 72-year-old Peter Blomberg, served as assistant chief of the Botsford Fire Department and was walking to a fire commissioners meeting when the incident occurred. He was crossing Church Hill Road near the intersection with Dayton Street when he was hit by a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck traveling eastbound. Police stated that the driver remained at the scene and has been cooperative with the ongoing investigation.
After the accident, emergency services responded quickly, with the Newtown Police Department and ambulance crews arriving around 6:15 p.m. Blomberg was taken to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after due to the injuries he sustained.
