A 27-year-old man from New Jersey tragically lost his life in a box truck accident on Route 322 near Hummelstown on Monday, November 11. The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. when the driver veered off the westbound lane, hitting a roadside message board before colliding with a concrete barrier. After traveling up an embankment, the truck ultimately struck the Fiddlers Elbow bridge abutment head-on, causing the vehicle to roll onto its side.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene and attempted life-saving measures, but the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Derry Township Police Department later commented that the driver’s name is being withheld pending notification of family members. The investigation is being managed by the Traffic Safety Unit of the Derry Township Police and the Dauphin County Accident Reconstruction Team.
Due to the severity of the accident, both directions of Route 322 were closed for several hours while emergency responders and investigators worked. The eastbound lanes were reopened around 1:30 p.m., but the westbound side remained shut down until about 4:15 p.m. This was necessary not just for the investigation but also for highway engineers to inspect the structural integrity of the bridge involved in the accident.
Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have witnessed the crash to reach out to Sergeant Jana Klinger at 717-534-2202. The details surrounding the accident are still being comprehensively reviewed as law enforcement continues their investigation.
