In the early hours of a Friday morning, a tragic accident occurred on Interstate 70 near Old Staunton Road in Madison County. Illinois State Police reported the crash involved a Volkswagen Jetta and a semitruck. Initial investigations revealed the driver of the Jetta, later identified as 43-year-old Douglas Lodge from St. Louis, struck a guardrail, causing the car to be stranded in the left lane. A semitruck traveling in the same lane was unable to stop in time, colliding with the Jetta.
The accident, which happened at around 3:20 a.m., led to the closure of all eastbound lanes of I-70 and the ramp from I-55 southbound to I-70 for several hours as officers conducted their investigation. Sadly, Douglas Lodge was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital following the accident. The driver of the semitruck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is cooperating with the investigation, according to the Madison County coroner.
