A second driver has been charged in connection with a tragic crash that took the life of 24-year-old Mya Angela Steed near Grovetown, Georgia. The incident occurred on Interstate 20 near the Lewiston Road exit on July 5, 2024. According to authorities, one vehicle was traveling well below the minimum speed with a flat tire, while the other driver was distracted, allegedly using a cellphone to watch YouTube videos at the time of the accident.
Steed was a passenger in a 2013 Nissan Altima being driven by a friend, who was aware of the tire issue but decided to re-enter the interstate despite its unsafe condition. This vehicle was traveling at only 10 to 15 mph with its hazard lights on when it was rear-ended by a 2020 Chevrolet Express. The impact of the crash caused the Altima to veer off the road and land in a ditch. Emergency responders arrived on scene shortly after the accident, and Steed was transported to Doctor’s Hospital, where she was tragically pronounced dead.
Authorities have now arrested both drivers involved in the crash. The driver of the Altima, who was cited for operating an unsafe vehicle, driving with a suspended license, and failure to maintain minimum speed, was charged with homicide by vehicle in the second degree. Similarly, the driver of the Express faces charges of homicide by vehicle in the second degree as well as other traffic violations.
