A man has died following a tragic crash involving four vehicles on Interstate 81 in Lebanon County. The accident occurred on Thursday, November 14, around 2:40 a.m. in the northbound lanes near Exit 80, also known as Route 743/Grantville/Hershey. The Pennsylvania State Police reported that James Stokes, a 27-year-old from Cresco in Monroe County, was a front-seat passenger in one of the vehicles involved.
Initial investigations indicate that the accident started when a tractor-trailer rear-ended another tractor-trailer, causing the first to jackknife. This incident triggered a chain reaction involving a Subaru Outback and a Hyundai Elantra. The Subaru collided with the second tractor-trailer, and as it was pushed into the left lane, it was struck by the Elantra, which subsequently caught fire. Emergency crews worked at the scene, shutting down the northbound lanes for approximately nine hours. They finally reopened around 11:50 a.m., but not before significant delays for travelers in the area.
James Stokes was pronounced dead at the scene. The drivers of the second tractor-trailer and the Subaru Outback were taken for medical evaluations at Hershey Medical Center. Victims' families and local supporters are deeply affected by this loss, which has resonated within the community.
Troopers have called for any witnesses or those with dashcam footage to contact the Jonestown station of the Pennsylvania State Police at 717-865-2194. This incident highlights the tragic consequences of vehicle collisions and the importance of road safety.
