Two people are dead following a tragic accident on U.S. 35 in Greene County on Saturday morning. The Ohio State Highway Patrol reported that around 8:45 a.m., a crash occurred involving a U-Haul and a semi-trailer at the intersection of U.S. 35 and North Valley Road. The semi, driven by 34-year-old Kendall J. Fowler from Eastanollee, Georgia, had stopped at a red light when the U-Haul, operated by 78-year-old Val Vern McLuff from Superior, Wisconsin, collided into the back of it. Mr. McLuff and his passenger, 64-year-old Veronica L. Smith, also from Superior, were pronounced deceased at the scene by the Greene County Coroner’s Office.
Initial investigations indicate that McLuff’s U-Haul was traveling southeast on U.S. 35 when the accident occurred. While the driver of the semi was evaluated by medics on site, he sustained no injuries. The crash reportedly caused significant damage to the U-Haul, and sadly, a dog traveling with the victims was also killed in the incident. Authorities have not suggested that speed or substance impairment played a role in the accident, but they are looking into factors such as sun glare for further insights.
As of the time of reporting, U.S. 35 had been reopened after being closed for several hours to facilitate investigations and clear the scene. The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by multiple local agencies, including the Greene County Sheriff’s Office and Beavercreek Township Fire and EMS. This section of U.S. 35 has been undergoing construction for over a year, with changes to the traffic pattern impacting the area.
