Zachariah X. Morris, 18, of Gainesville, was found dead along Highway 181, north of Highway 160, in Ozark County, Missouri. Investigators determined he had likely been struck by a vehicle. The fatal pedestrian case was reported October 30, 2026. The crash date was not specified, and October 26 marks the start of the investigation rather than a confirmed collision date.
The Ozark County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol on October 26, 2026, to investigate the death. The patrol’s Troop G Criminal Investigation Unit worked with the sheriff’s office on the case, while the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to examine the scene. Morris’s next of kin were notified.
Officers searched the surrounding area for the driver and vehicle believed to have been involved. During the investigation, they found evidence connecting an abandoned vehicle near the scene to the crash. Authorities said evidence collected at the location where Morris was found and at the abandoned vehicle’s location would be submitted to the patrol’s Crime Laboratory for further examination. Details about the vehicle’s make or model and the suspected collision’s circumstances were not reported.
Investigators identified Ransom D. Uchtman, 26, of Gainesville, as a person of interest. On the evening of October 27, 2026, they interviewed him at the Ozark County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities arrested Uchtman after the interview and placed him on an investigative hold at the Ozark County Jail.
Investigators then prepared a probable cause statement detailing their findings and sent it to the Ozark County prosecutor for review and consideration of criminal charges. The prosecutor filed the charges on October 28, 2026.
Uchtman was charged with second-degree involuntary manslaughter, leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, armed criminal action and two counts of operating a motor vehicle in a careless and imprudent manner involving an accident.
The patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control announced the arrest following the joint investigation. As of the October 30 report, Uchtman remained in the Ozark County Jail without bond.
The charges are allegations and are not proof of guilt. Prosecutors must present evidence supporting the charges in court, and Uchtman’s guilt or innocence will be determined through the court process.
