A Pennsylvania man named Carlos Santos-Guifarro, 34, was arrested in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, after allegedly driving his vehicle off a highway with his family inside and then attacking an EMS worker with a pair of scissors. According to local news reports, the incident began when Santos-Guifarro's vehicle veered off the U.S. 64 Bypass and fell approximately 25 feet onto Howard Avenue Extension. The crash involved the driver, a woman, and her two young daughters, who had accompanying injuries not consistent with the crash.
Following the vehicle accident, Santos-Guifarro was treated in the back of an ambulance when he reportedly stabbed an EMS worker in the neck several times. The EMS employee sustained a puncture wound, which luckily was not deep, due in part to the dull blade of the scissors. Authorities quickly intervened, deploying a taser to subdue Santos-Guifarro and placing him in custody without further incident. The EMS worker is expected to recover from the attack.
Local law enforcement clarified that their investigation revealed the crash was not an accident but an intentional act, indicating a premeditated harmful plan. In addition to the attempted murder charges stemming from the stabbing, Santos-Guifarro was also charged with multiple counts of assault by strangulation. He is being held at the Edgecombe County Detention Center with a bond set at an alarming $3 million.
The case highlights the alarming nature of violence against first responders, which is considered rare in the area. In addition to the emotional impact on the victims, such instances raise broader concerns about community safety and mental health. As the situation is still evolving, Santos-Guifarro is scheduled to appear in court again on November 27.
