A 36-year-old man from North Branch died at a local hospital after the ambulance transporting him overturned in a collision in Sterling Heights, Michigan, on Sunday, October 25, 2026. The crash happened around 6 p.m. at the intersection of Van Dyke and Metropolitan Parkway, according to police.
The ambulance was traveling south on Van Dyke with its emergency lights and siren activated. Police said a Jeep traveling east on Metropolitan Parkway struck the ambulance on its passenger side. The ambulance then rolled over.
A staff member riding in the rear of the Aspire Rural Health System ambulance was taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries. The ambulance driver and the Jeep driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sterling Heights police were investigating the events leading to the collision, including vehicle speeds and the traffic signals for each direction of travel. Investigators were still gathering information from witnesses. Police said the circumstances resulting in the patient's death also remained under investigation. WXYZ reported that Aspire Rural Health System had not answered its questions about why the patient was being transported or his condition before the collision. The available reporting therefore does not establish whether the crash caused his death.
Police Lt. Lamar Kashat identified Van Dyke and Metropolitan Parkway as an intersection with ongoing safety concerns. He described recent efforts to improve safety there, including the department's Safe Road Task Force, Traffic Calming Task Force and Safe Streets Initiative. Those efforts were discussed separately from the investigation into this collision, whose cause had not been determined.
Police reminded motorists to slow down and pull to the right when they see or hear an emergency vehicle. Anyone who witnessed the crash was asked to contact Officer Porter with the Sterling Heights Police Department's Traffic Safety Bureau at 586-446-2920.
