Authorities said a 78-year-old Tallahassee man died Saturday morning after a single-vehicle crash in the parking lot of the McDonald's at 3631 Mahan Drive in eastern Leon County.
The crash was reported around 11:49 a.m. Investigators said the man was driving west through the parking lot in a modified, street-legal race car when he lost control while accelerating through a left-hand curve.
According to authorities, the vehicle struck a concrete curb, and a nitrous oxide tank tore and ignited. The car then continued into several trees, a retaining wall, and a guardrail before coming to rest fully engulfed in flames.
The driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. No other injuries were reported in the information released. Leon County EMS, the Leon County Sheriff's Office, and Leon County Fire Rescue assisted at the scene.
