Three horses died after a crash on Louisiana's Sunshine Bridge that closed the eastbound lane for hours. The crash was reported October 26, 2026. No human injuries or deaths were reported.
Members of Situated Riderz, a Louisiana trail riding group, were returning home from a day of riding in Napoleonville when the collision occurred. The group keeps many of its horses at a barn in Montz.
Founder Anthony Carter described the trailer gate opening during the crash and seeing a horse trapped beneath a car. His account detailed the immediate aftermath but did not establish how the collision began.
Carter said two horses died on the bridge, while a third died several hours later. One horse survived.
The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the scene. The agency also reported that the eastbound lane remained closed for hours and identified Louisiana State Police as the agency handling the investigation.
According to members of the riding group, a driver got out of a car and ran along the bridge's eastbound lane toward Donaldsonville. That account came from the group, rather than an announced finding by investigators.
Michael Parker, a Situated Riderz member who owned one of the horses that died, described the loss as devastating because of the bond he had formed with the animal. Carter said the group was focusing on supporting its members and rebuilding after the crash.
Louisiana State Police confirmed the investigation remained open. The riding group said no arrests had been made and asked anyone with information about the car or driver to come forward.
