Authorities said a two-vehicle crash on Thornhill Road west of Winter Haven left a 77-year-old woman dead and two other people with minor injuries Tuesday morning.
The collision happened at about 8:07 a.m. on June 2, 2026, on Thornhill Road roughly a quarter-mile south of Winter Lake Road in Polk County. Reports indicate the crash involved a 2026 Kia Sportage and a 2009 Chevy pickup truck.
Investigators said the woman who died was a passenger in the Kia. She was identified only as a 77-year-old Winter Haven resident. Emergency crews took all three people involved to local hospitals, where the passenger later died. The Kia's driver, identified in reports as the woman's 66-year-old husband, and the pickup driver, a 50-year-old Winter Haven woman, were reported to have minor injuries.
According to authorities, a preliminary investigation found the Kia was traveling north when it either stopped or slowed behind other vehicles waiting at a traffic light. Investigators said the SUV then entered the southbound lane, where it collided with the approaching pickup. Both drivers reportedly tried to avoid the impact. Officials have not announced any charges, and the investigation was still ongoing as of the latest reports.
Thornhill Road was closed for about three hours while deputies and fire rescue crews worked the scene and gathered evidence. Authorities also said everyone involved appeared to have been wearing seat belts.
