Late on a Sunday evening, Knoxville experienced the tragedy of two fatal accidents on I-40 East. In the first incident, which occurred around 8:15 p.m. near the Papermill Drive exit, a male pedestrian attempting to cross the interstate was struck by two vehicles: first by a Honda SUV and then by a Mazda SUV. Despite the immediate response by officers, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Both drivers remained on site, cooperating with the Knoxville Police Department's ongoing investigation. The pedestrian has been tentatively identified, pending confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office.
Just hours later, at approximately 10:45 p.m., another fatal crash unfolded on I-40 East near the West Hills exit. A Chevy Corvette collided with the rear end of a semi-truck as the latter was slowing down due to traffic. Speed is suspected to have contributed to the crash. Responding officers and emergency personnel confirmed the Corvette driver, an adult male, had died in the accident. His identity is being withheld until all next of kin can be notified.
These tragic events have left the community in shock, and the Knoxville Police Department is working diligently to piece together the details through active investigations led by crash reconstruction personnel. Road closures were implemented to ensure thorough examinations, and the impacted stretches of the interstate were reopened by late Sunday night.
