A DeTour Area school bus went into a roadside ditch following a three-vehicle crash on M-129 just north of Pickford in Chippewa County, Michigan, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The emergency call came in around 8:15 a.m. for the collision in front of Dollar General. A pickup and an SUV were the other vehicles involved.
The pickup driver said he had stopped to turn left into the store when he noticed in his rearview mirror that the SUV behind him was not slowing. He said he braced before the SUV struck the pickup. According to his account, the SUV then continued into the school bus's path, causing the bus to veer into the ditch on the west side of M-129.
Three students, a driver and an aide were aboard the bus when first responders arrived. Two of the students were using wheelchairs.
Pickford Fire Chief Jim Miller praised the bus driver for caring for the students and communicating with firefighters and emergency medical personnel. He said the driver shared information about the children that helped responders understand how to keep them calm.
Miller said everyone involved was assessed at the scene for injuries, and no one was transported to a hospital. The scene was cleared shortly before 10:30 a.m.
