A Rochester police officer and a 47-year-old man were taken to a hospital after a police cruiser collided with another car at Campbell Street and Ames Street in Rochester, New York, around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
The officer was responding to a call with the cruiser's emergency lights and siren activated, according to Rochester police. The officer had non-life-threatening injuries and was released from the hospital. The other man's injuries and condition were not specified in the available report.
The front of the cruiser had heavy damage, and its airbags had deployed. A traffic light pole was knocked over at the intersection. One of the lights became detached from the pole.
Police said the intersection would stay closed until the Department of Transportation cleared the area. Temporary traffic controls reported at Campbell and Ames included a flashing red traffic light and posted stop signs, so motorists would treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
Nearby resident Shirronda Hill and her husband said they heard sirens approaching before they heard the crash. Hill said she saw the fallen pole on the police car from her window and could not tell whether everyone had been taken out of the vehicle.
A camera at Hill's home recorded the emergency response at 11:44 p.m., about 15 minutes after the crash. Hill said her cameras face the road but only record and send notifications when they detect a person. The footage described in the report showed the response, rather than the collision itself.
Hill and her husband had moved into the home about a year and a half earlier. She said she frequently hears and sees crashes at the corner and estimated she had seen about 10 since moving there. She expressed concern that a crash could send a car into her home. The couple also said the turn is difficult for semitrailers trying to get onto Interstate 490 west.
Rochester police said the circumstances surrounding the collision remained under investigation. The report did not identify which direction either vehicle was traveling or describe the traffic signal indications at the time of the crash. A time for the intersection to fully reopen was not provided.
