Three women and three children were injured when a car went onto a sidewalk and struck pedestrians and a parked ambulance during a Halloween event in Bushwick, Brooklyn, on Thursday, October 29, 2026. Police said the crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. near the corner of Knickerbocker Avenue and Bleecker Street, outside the NYPD's 83rd Precinct.
Families had gathered for the precinct's trunk-or-treat event, which had been promoted on social media. Witnesses described a black sedan accelerating, going over the curb and entering the sidewalk. They said the impact pushed the parked ambulance into people gathered outside the station. One eyewitness said the car struck two vehicles during the sequence of impacts.
The ambulance sustained heavy damage on its front passenger side. One witness said people on the sidewalk were knocked down. Another described narrowly avoiding being hit after stepping out of a cab with her baby, saying she shifted the child as a vehicle was pushed toward them.
A 31-year-old woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital with her two daughters, including a 6-year-old girl. A 53-year-old woman was transported to Elmhurst Hospital, while a 74-year-old woman and an 8-year-old boy were taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center.
The boy's grandmother said he suffered a fractured arm. All six people who were hospitalized were expected to survive, according to law enforcement sources.
Witnesses described confusion immediately after the impact, with some people running because they initially thought the noise was gunfire. A bumper from the car remained at the scene among candy wrappers.
Witnesses said officers quickly located the driver outside the precinct. One witness described alerting officers because the driver appeared ready to leave, then seeing police arrest him. Witnesses also said a passenger was in the car.
In an initial account of the response, a law enforcement source said the person taken into custody at the scene was undergoing testing for both drugs and alcohol. At that stage, police said charges were pending.
The driver was identified as Michael Marsh, 56. He was charged late Thursday with vehicular assault, reckless endangerment and driving while impaired and intoxicated. Law enforcement sources said he was allegedly intoxicated and had an alcohol level above the legal limit.
Law enforcement sources said there was no indication that the driver intended to target police officers or pedestrians. Police initially said it was unclear why the car went onto the sidewalk. The crash remained under investigation.
The Halloween gathering had been scheduled to run until 5 p.m. It ended early because of the crash.
