A serious car accident recently occurred in Harwich, affecting five teenagers and resulting in charges against the 18-year-old driver from Brewster. The incident took place late on a Monday evening, when the driver was spotted speeding by Officer Jessica Ferreira on Queen Anne Road. Shortly thereafter, the BMW the teenagers were traveling in accelerated even further and passed by Officer Thomas Griffiths, who was stationed farther down the road. Griffiths attempted to follow the speeding car but lost sight as it careened into the woods, bursting into flames when he arrived at the scene.
Heroic actions by Officer Griffiths and Officer Ferreira were critical in rescuing one of the teenagers who remained trapped in the burning vehicle. Griffiths used a fire extinguisher to manage the flames and successfully pulled the trapped teen from the car. Both officers worked together to move the injured teens to safety and administer on-the-spot care. Three of the teenagers were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening, whereas two others needed urgent medical air transport to Massachusetts General Hospital due to more grave injuries. Police have not disclosed the names of any of the teens involved, and the case is still under investigation by local law enforcement.
The swift and courageous actions taken by Officer Griffiths and Officer Ferreira were acknowledged by Harwich Police Chief Kevin Considine, who credited them with saving lives that night. While the crash’s investigation is ongoing, this tragic event serves as a reminder of the dangerous consequences of reckless driving.
