A serious crash involving a semi-truck and a van shut down part of southbound I-75 in Sarasota County on Thursday morning, leaving two people hospitalized and causing significant traffic disruption near Mile Marker 174.
Authorities said the collision happened at about 10:28 a.m. on August 6. Early reports indicate a Freightliner truck with a trailer and a Ford van were both traveling south when the truck struck the rear of the van. After the impact, the van went off the right side of the interstate and overturned in the grassy shoulder. The truck also left the roadway and overturned nearby.
The van was driven by a 62-year-old Tampa man. He and a passenger in the van were both taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. No additional injury details were released in the reports reviewed. Information about the truck driver’s condition was not clearly stated.
The crash led to a shutdown of southbound lanes in the area and a lengthy traffic backup. Local reports described congestion stretching for several miles as crews responded and worked to clear the wreckage.
The Florida Highway Patrol was identified as the investigating agency. At this stage, the crash remains under investigation, and no final findings beyond the initial account have been announced.
For families affected by a serious interstate crash, documents such as the highway patrol report, medical records, photos, and insurance correspondence can become important in the days ahead. When injuries are involved and questions remain, some people choose to speak with a car accident lawyer about their options before making major insurance decisions.
