Two women died and three other people suffered serious injuries in a three-vehicle collision at US-31 and Sugar Grove Road in Sherman Township, Mason County, Michigan, on Friday, October 23, 2026.
The Mason County Sheriff's Office placed the crash at approximately 4:46 p.m. In the preliminary account reported by 9&10 News, a minivan traveling west on Sugar Grove Road failed to stop at a stop sign and struck a northbound motorcycle. A southbound pickup then struck the minivan's passenger side.
The minivan was a 2014 Chrysler Town & Country. Its driver, Sheila Gruber, 69, and passenger Meghan Evans, 28, both of Bear Lake, died at the scene. They were the vehicle's only occupants.
Veronica Clawson, 57, of Goshen, Indiana, was riding the motorcycle and was ejected. Authorities described her injuries as serious. WSBT separately reported that friends said she had undergone three surgeries in Grand Rapids. That later account did not explain the full sequence of hospital treatment.
The pickup was a 2019 Ford F-350 driven by David Vanlopik, 67, of Schoolcraft. Passenger David Sytsma, 75, was from Kalamazoo. Both men suffered serious injuries, according to the sheriff's account.
The initial local report identified Corewell Hospital in Ludington as the destination for the injured people. Authorities' account of the vehicle movements was preliminary; the reports reviewed did not announce final investigative findings or criminal charges.
