In a tragic accident on a rural Kansas highway, a Lawrence man lost his life while his wife and toddler are recovering from their injuries. The accident happened just before noon on Saturday, November 30th, when emergency responders were alerted to the scene of a crash at the intersection of Highway 36 and West Road, about five miles west of Fairview. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Mark E. Ditmars, 37, was driving south on W Road in a 2017 Ram pickup when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign.
Taylar K. Deere-Novotny, 33, was traveling west on Highway 36 in a 2017 Honda CR-V with her husband, William J. Novotny, and their 3-year-old daughter when the truck collided broadside with their vehicle. William Novotny, sadly, was pronounced dead at the scene. Taylar suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to Sabetha Hospital, along with her daughter, Bonnie Ann, who had suspected minor injuries. Ditmars and his passenger, Jonathan R. Ditmars, 36, both sustained serious injuries and were transported to Hiawatha Hospital.
The Kansas Highway Patrol confirmed that all individuals involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. As of now, no further details have been released by the authorities.
