Gracie Dunbar, a 14-year-old Harwood Union High School freshman, was flown to the University of Vermont Medical Center and later died after a single-vehicle crash in Warren, Vermont, on Saturday, October 24, 2026.
Vermont State Police were called to the intersection of Plunkton Road and Southview Road just before 4 p.m. Police said the car was traveling south at a high rate of speed when the 16-year-old driver lost control and struck a tree.
Dunbar was a passenger in the car. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.
The driver was a junior at Harwood Union. Accounts of the driver's condition differed: police reported minor injuries, while a statement from the Harwood Unified Union School District said the student had no physical injuries.
The district said Dunbar's mother had asked school officials to inform the community about her daughter's death. Its statement acknowledged the grief facing both students' families, along with their classmates, teachers and friends.
School leaders met Sunday to coordinate support at Harwood, Brookside and Crossett Brook. The district said the students' siblings attend Brookside and Crossett Brook, making support across those schools part of the response.
School officials encouraged families to check in with their children, listen to their questions and contact their school if they needed additional support. The district also urged compassion and patience as the school community grieved.
Vermont State Police said the crash remained under investigation.
