A driver was taken to a nearby hospital after a head-on crash on Highway 152 just east of the Highway 156 interchange in California on October 17, 2026, authorities said. The driver's name, age and specific injuries were not reported. The California Highway Patrol began receiving calls about a wrong-way driver in the area at about 9:56 a.m. According to CHP Sgt. Robert Lehman, a woman driving a Chevrolet Cruze was heading east in the highway's westbound lanes. The Cruze collided head-on with another vehicle and overturned, Lehman said. The person taken to the hospital was driving the vehicle struck by the Cruze. A passing motorist stopped to check on the people involved in the collision. Authorities said the woman driving the Cruze then carjacked that motorist and left the crash scene in the motorist's vehicle. The woman traveled toward Gilroy, where local police spotted the vehicle on Monterey Road and began a pursuit. Officers later lost sight of the vehicle, authorities said. The pursuit took place after the Highway 152 collision, not at the reported crash location. Authorities said the woman subsequently reached San Jose, where she died after inflicting stab wounds on herself. Her later death was not attributed to injuries from the Highway 152 crash.
