A serious single-vehicle crash shut down part of northbound US 19 in Palm Harbor on Tuesday morning after a car left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
Authorities said the crash happened at about 7:00 to 7:05 a.m. on May 19 near Cypress Drive. Investigators reported that a Ford Taurus was traveling north on US 19 when the driver lost control, departed the road, and hit the pole.
A 59-year-old woman who was driving and a 44-year-old man riding as a passenger both suffered serious injuries. Emergency crews had to carry out an extended extrication before the two occupants could be removed from the vehicle. Both were then airlifted to a hospital for treatment.
Reports said a small dog was also inside the car. The animal appeared to have avoided injury and was taken to a veterinary clinic for evaluation.
Traffic in the area was affected for more than an hour while firefighters and other responders worked at the scene. All lanes were reported reopened by about 8:45 a.m. The crash remains under investigation.
