One person was seriously injured in a car accident on Saturday night in Lyon County. The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) reports that the incident occurred shortly after 9:30 PM on I-335 at Turnpike mile marker 131.3, which is near the service exit entrance and about four miles northeast of the Emporia tollgate. The accident involved a 2005 Freightliner Tractor driven by 27-year-old Miguel Ceron-Maldonado from Puebla, Mexico.
According to the KHP crash log, Ceron-Maldonado was traveling northbound in the left lane when his semi-truck veered off the road to the left and overturned. Witnesses noted that the driver was pinned inside the cab of the truck and required extrication. Emergency responders from Emporia Fire and EMS quickly arrived at the scene, and Ceron-Maldonado was airlifted by EagleMed to the KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas, where he is being treated for suspected serious injuries. Remarkably, he was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
