An 18-year-old man from Aurora tragically lost his life in a significant traffic accident early Sunday on Interstate 70 near Watkins. This distressing incident involved the young driver traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes of the interstate, resulting in a severe collision with a semi-trailer. According to local news sources, the accident occurred around 12:15 a.m., prompting swift action from the Colorado State Patrol.
The Colorado State Patrol reported that troopers received an alert about a wrong-way driver on I-70. Upon arrival, they found a Subaru Impreza parked in the wrong direction on the inside shoulder of the highway. Despite attempts by a trooper to capture the driver's attention using a spotlight, the young man continued driving against traffic. The trooper, with emergency lights engaged, followed the vehicle while maintaining a safe distance on the opposite side of the road.
As efforts to stop the car proved unsuccessful, the Subaru eventually met a semi-truck head-on, resulting in the immediate death of the young Aurora resident. The driver of the semi-trailer fortunately did not sustain any injuries in the accident. The identity of the 18-year-old victim will be formally released by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office following family notification and a completed autopsy.
