It’s been a somber few days on the roadways in the CSRA region. Monday saw a tragic incident unfold in Aiken County involving a car chase. 39-year-old Michael Bailey from Norfolk, Virginia, was involved in a pursuit with the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. According to officials, a deputy attempted to stop Bailey on suspicion of driving under the influence. However, Bailey attempted to flee. In the ensuing chase, his 2017 Kia sport utility vehicle left the road, overturned, and struck a tree on Laurens Street Northwest near Hampton Avenue. Authorities pronounced Bailey dead at the scene at around 1:20 a.m. A passenger riding with Bailey was taken to Wellstar MCG hospital in Augusta for treatment of injuries.
The same period saw another fatality in Washington County after an unfortunate traffic accident outside Sandersville. Bobby Dalton, a 55-year-old local resident, was involved in a crash near Woodbine Drive on Sunday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest that Dalton might have suffered a medical emergency which led to the accident. The Georgia State Patrol disclosed that his Toyota Tacoma was hit by a passing Honda Accord, which attempted to overtake in a no-passing zone. Dalton succumbed to his injuries at Washington County Regional Medical Center, with investigations still ongoing to determine if a medical condition contributed to the accident.
In Richmond County, a tragic hit-and-run on Friday claimed the life of a pedestrian. Vincent Depirro, aged 61, was struck at the intersection of 10th and Greene streets. Despite being rushed to Wellstar MCG hospital, Depirro was pronounced dead later that evening. The local coroner’s office is actively investigating the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward.
Three days after a separate accident in Saluda County, another life was lost. Joseph T. Ray, 35, passed away following injuries sustained in a crash involving a Chevrolet pickup and a Jeep.
