A double-fatality crash occurred on Interstate 49 near Jasper, Missouri, in the early afternoon. Around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, a serious incident prompted emergency services to respond on the northbound lanes of the interstate, just past the exit 66 off-ramp. Initial reports indicate that the crash was caused by a 30-year-old driver from Carthage who fell asleep at the wheel while driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla. This vehicle, which had nearly come to a stop, was subsequently struck from behind at high speed by a 2017 Ford F-250 driven by a 56-year-old man from Mount Vernon.
The impact was severe, sending both vehicles across the median and coming to a stop on the northbound side. In the Toyota Corolla, four passengers were inside. Sadly, two individuals, identified as Veronica Azucena Marroquin Chavez, 27, and Erick Francisco Vasquez Marroquin, 33, both from Carthage, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Corolla and another passenger, a 33-year-old woman, sustained moderate injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital in Joplin for treatment.
In the aftermath of the crash, the Jasper County Coroner confirmed the identities of the deceased, and their next of kin have been informed. The Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Major Crash Investigation Unit has taken over the investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the crash.
